My CD wish list
OK, I’ll admit it: I have a CD-buying habit. It’s not as destructive or expensive as many other habits I could have, but it still drives me to purchase more music, new music all the time.
My last new CD came in the mail on Friday - I had pre-ordered Chris Rice’s new CD, amused, back a couple of months ago. I’m not sure how well I like it yet; I’ll have to listen some more. Chris Rice has been on my automatically-buy list pretty much ever since his first album, and I haven’t been disappointed yet. Hopefully the streak continues. Before that, I got Andy Osenga’s [Souvenirs & Postcards], and then just before that Randall Goodgame’s War and Peace. I guess you could say I’m just doing catch-up as I find these new artists that I like so much.
Since I have to hold back a bit, I’ll at least post my list here so I can add to it from time to time, or note when I have purchased another one. If any of you reading this feel the desire to get one for me, go ahead. :-) They are listed in a basic priority order… which is always subject to change.
The Normals I don’t own any of their albums yet, but I should get all of them:_
- A Place Where You Belong
- Coming To Life
- Better Than This
They are available, all 3 for $24 at http://www.creativesitesmedia.com/normals/merch.shtml. I will admit to being torn between getting them for that good price or supporting Andy O directly by buying them from his site at a slightly higher price.
- Arkadelphia
- The Hymnal
Available for purchase at http://www.uthstuph.com/ws/randallgoodgame/. I appreciate his War and Peace more every time I hear it… I need to catch up on his other stuff.
- Illinois
I wrote about this one before. I still haven’t purchased it.
- Gypsy Flat Road
- The Crucible
I have only one of Sandra’s albums right now: Best Laid Plans. I’d sure like to add the other two.
Other things floating around at the bottom of the list: Ryan Adams’ [Cold Roses], and maybe Nickel Creek’s [Why Should the Fire Die?].
I guess that’s it for now. I imagine I’ll be adding to this list before I subtract from it too much. :-)
OfficeMax Replacement Watch, Day 15
Yes, it’s been over two weeks now since I first took my dead PDA in to get it replaced. If their estimates hold up, sometime around Labor Day I should be receiving my gift card so I can purchase a replacement.
Arrrrrrrgh.
OfficeMax Replacement Watch, Day 12
No events to report today.
It is starting to drive me crazy not having my PDA. I didn’t realize how much I rely on it for calendar and note-taking (not to mention game-playing) until I’ve been without it for the better part of two weeks. If I had any other big purchases planned, I’d just go buy one from somewhere today and then use the OfficeMax gift card later for that purchase… but I don’t know what it might be.
Come On! Feel The Illinoise!
There have been a ton of reviews of Sufjan Stevens’ new album, [Illinois], floating around lately. I hadn’t heard any of his music, and after having one friend say “eh… not getting into it that much”, I had pretty much decided that it was going to go on my ignore list. But then three nights in a row, listening to my local NPR station whilst driving my car, I heard some rather interesting tunes… which, when the announcer came back to credit them, were all from the aforementioned Mr. Stevens album.
My interest thus piqued, I did a little internet research and found that Amazon has two free tracks you can download. Then I found this post on Richard’s blog which pointed me towards several more downloads. I’ve downloaded 6 tracks so far (which is only about 25% of the album…) and I’m really impressed. The song names are goofy (“The Black Hawk War, Or, How To Demolish An Entire Civilization And Still Feel Good About Yourself In The Morning, Or, We Apologize For The Inconvenience But You’re Going To Have To Leave Now, Or, ‘I Have Fought The Big Knives And Will Continue To Fight Them Until They Are Off Our Lands!’” is just one example), the subject matter is at times bizzare (“John Wayne Gacy, Jr.”), but the end result is captivating. The layered instrumentation, the quirky rhythms (the first track is in a neat 5/4 time), Sufjan’s mellow vocals, they all serve to create a total package that’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard before… but engrossing at the same time.
I think I’m going to have to go out and buy this album. I looked for it at BestBuy the other night and it was nowhere to be found. Maybe Barnes & Noble will have it; it’s on sale on their website, maybe it’ll be on sale in the store, too. I have a car trip planned to Wisconsin for this weekend; it would be fun to add Illinois to the journey.
OfficeMax MaxAssurance Replacement Watch, Day 11
Sent the package off yesterday afternoon… it’s headed to Dallas. I’m guessing the good ol’ US Postal Service should have it there no later than Saturday.
On the other hand, we got the new laptop yesterday so now I have a lot of fun setup tasks in front of me, including the wireless network. I really do enjoy setup tasks.
OfficeMax MaxAssurance Replacement Watch, Day 10
My prepaid mailing label came in the mail yesterday, so last night after softball I went to get everything boxed up. Needing to send along a copy of my original purchase receipt, I went down to my scanner to make a copy… and the scanner apparently has died. Great.
So, it didn’t get packaged last night. I’ll make a copy this morning, and then box it and take it to the post office this afternoon after work. If their original schedule is accurate, then I should be receiving my replacement gift card in, oh, about 3 weeks… :-(
OfficeMax MaxAssurance Replacement Watch, Day 9 (part 2)
My dear wife informs me that the mailing label came today.
You can bet I’ll be shipping that puppy out tomorrow; don’t want to be the cause of any slowness here.
the sweet relief of work completed
Last week was killer. I had soooo much to do. I’ve talked about this already so I won’t go on and on again.
It all went really well. The wedding was beautiful. The music worked out just fine, and the song that I was singing (and had never sung before) was right in my comfortable singing range. All good.
Saturday night after the wedding, my brothers and I went over to the church and worked up our worship set for the Sunday service. After we got that together, it degenerated into a Caedmon’s Call/Derek Webb jam session… good times.
Sunday morning the music went well; it was nice to have a strong lead guitar…. way to go Andrew!
Then came the sermon. I hadn’t prepared quite as much as I would’ve liked, but the message got out anyway. It’s a funny thing; you preach a sermon, and then the first 5 people that come up to you all say things like “hey, you made me think of [this point] or [that point]”, and I’m standing there thinking, “wow, those are good points, how did I miss those?” But then I recognize and appreciate that God used my words to speak in specific ways to specific people, even if it wasn’t what I thought I was going to teach them. Praise the Lord!
My family all took off for their respective homes after lunch on Sunday. After a short trip to the local sweet corn festival, it was time to come home and crash. The Cubs and the Cardinals were the Sunday night game on ESPN, and the Cubbies found a way to win the game! I can’t make sense of how they can drop 8 in a row, including getting swept by the Reds, but then can take 3 out of 4 against the league-leaders… but it was a fun game to watch, a nice way to end the weekend.
Next weekend we’re going to Wisconsin to visit the family again (gotta take the chances to see Aaron while he’s in-country), and I’ve just about got everything taken care of. I still haven’t managed to get ahold of the replacement pianist yet for Sunday… two e-mails and a phone message, and still no response. I hope she’s in town…
OfficeMax MaxAssurance Replacement Watch, Day 9
Note from Chris: I’m not usually this bitter… but I’m taking no small pleasure in the fact that this blog is the first Google hit on the search for “OfficeMax Replacement Plan”. Don’t know that my complaints will result in anything, but I’m going to document the arduous process.
Today is the ninth day since I started the process rolling to try to get my dead Palm Tungsten E replaced under the “MaxAssurance” plan I purchased from OfficeMax. Still no pre-paid mailing label. How long can it take to send a mailing label? If this is indicative of the way the whole process will go, I fully expect to be without my PDA for about 6 weeks, which to me is just unacceptable for a “replacement plan”.

The parts that crack me up the most are “No deductible–no unexpected future costs” and “Product experts are ready to provide instant troubleshooting, information and reliable service when you need it most.”
Yeah, if “no unexpected future costs” means “you’ll have to put out at least another $50 to get a replacement” and “product experts” are call-center workers working from a really short script…
Side note: I’ve seen the return process done really well; when I got a bad item from musiciansfriend.com, I called and they asked for my e-mail address; they sent me a link to get a pre-paid UPS label online, and I had it that same evening and shipped the stuff the next day. That’s how it should be done.
a busy weekend
I haven’t posted much this week… it’s been just a bit on the busy side. There’s been plenty to do at work, which means little boredom or free time, and the evenings have been just crazy.
This afternoon my family is coming to visit, which I’m very excited about - I haven’t seen my brother Aaron since Christmas since he’s been in Panama doing missions work. They’ll be staying all weekend.
Tonight I have a wedding rehearsal for a friend; I’m playing the piano and singing. Last night I had to write a transcription of a song that she wants played that there’s no sheet music for. It’s an instrumental from the soundtrack to the movie Love Actually. It’s a nice little instrumental, not too tough. Still, extra hassle having to transcribe. I just don’t trust my memory enough to do it without some music.
Saturday is the wedding, and I also need to get music together with my brothers for leading worship on Sunday. Still not sure what we’re going to do, but I’ll try to get a couple of them involved.
Sunday I’m not only leading worship, but also filling the pulpit since the pastor’s on vacation. This’ll be my third time preaching a full sermon, so I’m not really worried about it, but it’s just another thing I have to try to stuff into my brain so that I’m not just totally reading it off of the page. The sermon is going to be from 2 Thess 1:11-12, if you’re really interested.
I think by Sunday night I’ll be ready to collapse. About my only remaining task after that is to ensure I have a musician lined up for next week’s worship, since I’ll be taking the week off. I can’t wait…
