Changes Coming
Tonight after the service at Imago Christi, I read this brief letter to the congregation:
It has been a blessing to be at Imago Christi this year, to serve as an elder and as worship leader, and to help plan and organize a church in its very first days of existence. It is therefore with sadness tonight that I come to tell you that my family and I will be leaving Imago Christi Church as of the end of this month.
Why are we leaving? Like any decision, there are a multitude of reasons each having a small part in the big decision. Primarily, though, it comes down to personal and family needs, and the conviction that I need to reprioritize my life with family in mind first. Some have already asked "well, can't you stay at Imago and just reduce your responsibilities?" and believe me, we have wrestled long and hard with that question. I have had something of a pattern of this my past several years in ministry - needing to recalibrate, trying to reduce, finding it impossible to effect permanent change. It is that history, as much as anything, that has convinced me (and Becky, too) that bigger change is necessary.
In case I haven't been clear about it already, this isn't a case of anyone being forced to leave or asked to leave or pushed out - quite the opposite, I have been pleaded with at length to stay. We are still very much behind the mission of Imago Christi, and our prayers go with you. I know that some of you do not or will not understand quite why we made this decision. And that's OK. If you have questions feel free to talk to me afterwards. But please know that we have prayed much about this, and really feel like we are following God's leading here. So we go. And so we trust, and pray that you will, too, that God is at work in this, both for our family, and for Imago Christi as a church body.
This has been a very difficult decision for us over the past couple of months. In the end, though, we feel like this is where God is leading us - to make a break and try and re-form things in a way that works better for our family. We don't know where we'll end up for church, but we'll be looking around. That'll feel weird after nearly 10 years with mostly the same folks at Noelridge and Imago.
One day at a time.
Bullet points for a Wednesday
- Just realized I never gave you all any feedback on the first service at Imago Christi. It went pretty well - had 60 in attendance. Music was OK, though I starting singing the wrong verse of one hymn at one point, which threw everybody off.
- Just started my new book list for 2008. You can find the link on the sidebar. Only one book on it so far.
- I have resolved to not get any more books from the library until I read through the pile that's next to my bed. It has grown to where it won't fit under the lip of the bedside table any more - must be 15 books there. They're good things that I want to read, I just keep preempting them with newer stuff from the library. Gotta whittle that pile down.
- Just heard that Andrew Peterson will be doing a concert in Cedar Rapids the day after my birthday. Happy Birthday to me! Hey Andrew and Heather, when will you be back in the area for spring break? Want to come down to CR?
- Speaking of Andrew and Heather, we've been plotting (well, Becky's been plotting) our trip to WA this summer for the wedding. It's looking like fun.
- Next note on the wedding: I'm gonna have to buy a suit. I haven't owned a suit in years. The blazer I wore during college hasn't fit me through the shoulders since probably 2000.
- It's harder than it should be to remember that the Saturday night service at Imago wasn't a one-time event. I've got to plan music for this Saturday... should do that today.
It’s a big day
We've been working towards this for over a year now, and tonight it comes to pass: the first service at our downtown Cedar Rapids church plant, Imago Christi at Central Park. I think we're to the point where we've planned about as much as we can; now we just have to go for it and trust God to see us through. This is the point where the butterflies set in.
Pray for us today that we would be effective, and above all else, that God would be glorified.
(5:30 pm if you're in CR and want to come!)
Changes in the works
I presented this letter to the elder board at Noelridge last Thursday:
To the Elders at Noelridge:
It has been my privilege to serve the body at Noelridge with you for the past eight years, first as a deacon apprentice, then for a time as a deacon, then for a few years as an elder apprentice, and now for the past 18 months as an elder. You are dear brothers and friends to me, and I have learned much from each of you. However, the Lord has burdened my heart to serve fully in the upcoming church plant in downtown Cedar Rapids. As the day of the first service draws near, I find myself needing to devote more time to planning and preparation for that mission, and straining to try to remain consistent in my duties at Noelridge. I therefore request to be released from my responsibilities as an elder at Noelridge Park Church, effective immediately.
After much discussion with my wife, it is our plan that our family will attend the new church regularly and not Noelridge; our desire is for effective ministry balanced with church stability for ourselves and our daughters. I will work to make arrangements to transfer my various responsibilities to other church members over the coming weeks. I anticipate that I will continue to assist in leading music for the time being; Dave Tessier and I will work out plans to ensure that both Noelridge and the new congregation are well-led musically. We all covet your prayers as we embark on this great mission in the service of our Savior.
In Christ’s love,
Chris Hubbs
This is a big change for us. But we're excited about this church plant, and ready to see it happen. To my brothers and sisters at Noelridge who will undoubtedly read this and may have it be the first you've heard of it: yes, it means changes. We do have plans in the works that will mean I'll still be leading music at Noelridge once a month or so. And we'll still be around on Wednesday nights, so you haven't seen the last of Becky and the girls, either.
Pray for us and this church plant. We want to see great things for God's kingdom.
