Spencer, I think I sort of understand what you're getting at here. And I'm not trying to rail against folks who pursue those things in the political arena. Certainly there is a place for that activity, and God calls some to serve there.

I'm a little more hesitant to say that the Church should be involved in that system; I'd prefer to see the Church focus on the Gospel, and let those within the church, as they are motivated by God, go out into the political arena.

American society has effectively isolated itself according to categories despite all the claims to diversity, integration, and melting pot. I'm with you in that the Church should be constantly trespassing against these superficial boundaries, but at the same time, these boundaries are in large part why we are where we are. And the boundaries are intentional because it allows the kind of societal upheaval that people are attempting by way of gay marriage (we're gay, we don't bother you) and abortion (it's my choice, not anyone elses) and stem cell research (we're scientists, don't question our authority) and intelligent design (we know we're created) etc etc etc.

So, I guess my point is, the Church has to be engaged in two fronts - first and foremost in trespassing against boundaries. Second and less than charming is using the mechanisms of society (i.e. the sytems of law) to protect society. People will hate you for doing the second if it is not coupled with the first ... but sometimes you don't realize that you've failed at the first until you realize that you need to be involved in the second.

I dunno if I'm making sense ... just streaming my (un-? sub-?) consciousness here.
